Meta introduces AI-based message summaries to WhatsApp
Meta has unveiled a new feature for WhatsApp that utilizes AI to summarize unread messages in a chat. The summaries are designed to provide a quick overview of messages without compromising user privacy or encryption. Powered by Meta AI, the feature ensures that only the user can view the summaries, and they are not shared with anyone else in the chat. This innovation builds on Meta’s April AI release, which focused on maintaining privacy while enhancing communication capabilities. The AI uses ‘Private Processing’ technology, ensuring that both the AI-generated summaries and the messages themselves are never accessed by Meta or WhatsApp. Although the feature is initially available only in the U.S. and supports English, Meta plans to expand the feature to other languages and countries later this year. Users can enable or disable the feature through the settings menu under ‘Private Processing.’ The new AI capabilities also allow WhatsApp users to ask questions or request suggestions for messages within chats, expanding the AI’s role in improving user experience while respecting privacy. With this new addition, Meta is furthering its push to enhance WhatsApp’s capabilities with AI, aiming to make the app smarter and more efficient without infringing on privacy.
