Meta restructures teams and lays off several hundred employees worldwide
Meta has announced a new round of job cuts affecting several hundred employees across multiple departments, including sales, recruiting, and Reality Labs. According to reports from The Information and Bloomberg, the layoffs will impact staff in both the United States and international markets. Some affected employees will be offered alternative roles or relocation opportunities within the company. Meta stated that such restructuring efforts are a regular part of ensuring teams are positioned to meet their strategic goals. The number of employees affected in this round is reportedly under 1,000, a small fraction of the company’s nearly 79,000-person workforce at the end of 2025. This is the second layoff Meta has initiated in 2026; a previous round in January reduced the Reality Labs division by about 10%, cutting approximately 1,000 positions out of 15,000. Reality Labs is a key part of Meta’s efforts in virtual and augmented reality, areas that have undergone major reorganizations as the company invests heavily in artificial intelligence. Despite the staff reductions, Meta is continuing its aggressive spending plans for AI and expects record capital expenditures in 2026, estimated between $115 billion and $135 billion. The latest cuts reflect Meta’s broader strategy of streamlining operations while channeling resources toward its long-term investments in AI and immersive technologies.
