Meta to Block Access to Instagram, Facebook, and Threads for Australians Under 16

Meta has announced that it will block access to Instagram, Facebook, and Threads for users under the age of 16 in Australia, in response to a new law aimed at limiting social media usage among young teenagers. The ban is set to take effect by 10 December 2025, and Meta has begun notifying users aged 13 to 15 about the deactivation of their accounts. Starting from 4 December, the company will deactivate the accounts of those under 16 and block new sign-ups from minors. In order to comply with the law, Meta will use age verification methods, with a data minimization approach, only asking for additional information if a user’s age is in doubt. Antigone Davis, Meta’s Vice President and Global Head of Safety, stated that the process of ensuring compliance will continue beyond the initial deadline, but efforts are in place to complete the removals by 10 December. Currently, approximately 350,000 Instagram users and 150,000 Facebook users in Australia are aged between 13 and 15. Meta clarified that affected teenagers will have the option to update their contact details for future notifications once they reach 16. This measure is part of a broader effort to adhere to Australian regulations concerning online safety for young people.
