Meta Criticized for Delayed Response to Violent Content During 2024 UK Riots

An independent report by Meta’s oversight board has criticized the tech giant for its slow response to violent and hateful content during the UK riots that occurred between July 30 and August 7, 2024. These riots followed the tragic murder of three young girls in Southport, which led to the spread of misinformation falsely accusing a Muslim asylum seeker of the crime. The report highlights that Meta’s platforms failed to swiftly implement emergency moderation protocols and continued to rely on automated systems that allowed inflammatory posts to remain visible. Examples include posts inciting violence against Muslims and AI-generated images promoting hate. The board expressed particular concern over Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to move away from third-party fact-checking earlier in the year. Despite Meta claiming it took immediate steps to address the crisis, including forming a dedicated task force and removing thousands of posts, the oversight board reviewed three specific cases that were not acted upon appropriately. The report emphasizes the need for a more measured and effective response system and calls into question the balance Meta maintains between freedom of expression and incitement to violence. The board also evaluated posts offensive to the trans community but deemed them within the bounds of protected speech.
