Mexico Partners with Barcelona to Build Largest Supercomputer in Latin America

Mexico has taken a significant step toward establishing its first continental-class supercomputer, as the federal government signed an agreement with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). The ambitious project, announced on November 19, 2025, aims to build the largest supercomputer in Latin America, enabling Mexican scientists to access world-class computing infrastructure while developing domestic capabilities. Beginning in January 2026, Mexican researchers will gain access to MareNostrum 5, a supercomputer capable of performing 314 trillion operations per second, which will dramatically speed up research processes across various fields. The collaboration with BSC serves as an interim solution while Mexico builds its own infrastructure over the next 2-3 years. The project is expected to address critical needs in areas such as climate prediction, fiscal analysis, and satellite data processing. Furthermore, the initiative includes a robust educational component, training researchers and students in cutting-edge computational technologies. This move is also seen as a step toward greater technological sovereignty, positioning Mexico at the forefront of supercomputing in Latin America.
