Micron Launches 245TB SSD for Enterprise and AI Applications
Micron has announced the release of the world’s highest-capacity commercially available solid-state drive (SSD), the Micron 6600 ION, which offers an astonishing 245TB of storage on a single drive. Targeted at AI infrastructure, cloud providers, and hyperscalers, this SSD is designed to handle rapidly growing data demands. Micron claims that using this drive can reduce rack space by 82% compared to traditional hard disk drive (HDD) setups with similar storage capacity, while also significantly lowering power consumption and cooling requirements. The drive operates at approximately 30 watts, roughly half the power needed for comparable HDD configurations. Performance-wise, Micron highlights dramatic improvements, including up to 84 times better energy efficiency for AI workloads and much lower latency than HDD-based systems. While this kind of storage is far beyond typical consumer needs and pricing remains prohibitive, the technology demonstrates how SSD capacities are encroaching on areas once dominated by spinning disks. Analysts see this as a sign that enterprise storage solutions are increasingly shifting toward high-capacity SSDs, particularly for performance-critical applications where efficiency and speed are paramount.
