Microsoft to Phase Out Passwords in Authenticator App by August 2025

Microsoft is accelerating its move away from traditional passwords, confirming that by August 2025, saved and generated passwords will no longer be accessible through the Microsoft Authenticator app. Starting in June 2025, users will be unable to save new passwords, and in July, autofill features within Authenticator will be disabled. Microsoft encourages users to transition to Microsoft Edge, where saved passwords and autofill data will be synchronized securely with their Microsoft accounts. The shift aligns with broader industry trends promoting passkeys over passwords, which are increasingly seen as insecure due to rising phishing and cyberattack risks.

According to FIDO research, over 35% of users have experienced at least one account compromise due to password vulnerabilities. Microsoft is advocating for passkeys—cryptographic keys tied to specific devices—as a safer alternative. Despite removing password support from Authenticator, the app will still support passkeys and other secure login methods.

The article also warns about a new phishing attack that mimics Microsoft’s login interface using Google Apps Script, adding urgency to the move away from traditional password security models. Microsoft advises users not to migrate passwords to Edge blindly but instead adopt new security standards that eliminate passwords entirely.

In essence, this change marks a significant step toward a passwordless future, reflecting evolving cybersecurity practices.
