Microsoft Announces Major Commitments to Address European Data Sovereignty and Cloud Concerns

Microsoft has announced a comprehensive five-point plan to address growing concerns in Europe over data sovereignty, privacy, and the region’s reliance on US-based cloud providers. Amid increasing geopolitical and trade tensions between the US and Europe-exacerbated by the Trump administration’s policies-European governments and tech leaders are pushing for greater tech independence and sovereign infrastructure. In response, Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined measures including a 40% expansion of European datacenter capacity over the next two years, the completion of the Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty initiative, and the establishment of a European board of directors to oversee regional operations under European law. Microsoft is also committing to legally binding contracts that promise to contest any government order that would suspend or cease its European cloud operations, and to provide European partners with contingency access to key software code. The company will further bolster privacy by allowing customers more control over data storage, encryption, and access, and will appoint a Deputy CISO for Europe to enhance cybersecurity efforts.
