Microsoft Reduces Copilot AI Integrations in Windows 11 to Improve User Experience

Microsoft announced a series of adjustments to Windows 11 aimed at improving performance and usability by scaling back its integration of Copilot, the company’s AI assistant. Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, explained that Microsoft intends to integrate AI ‘where it’s most meaningful,’ focusing on making the technology genuinely useful rather than omnipresent. As part of this change, Copilot features will be reduced or removed from apps such as Photos, Widgets, Notepad, and the Snipping Tool. The move follows growing criticism from users who felt the operating system had become cluttered with unnecessary AI components. It also comes amid broader concerns about trust, security, and the overuse of artificial intelligence. A Pew Research study in 2025 found that half of U.S. adults are more concerned than excited about AI, a sharp increase from 2021. Microsoft has previously reconsidered its AI push, including delaying and reworking its Windows Recall feature due to privacy concerns. In addition to the Copilot rollback, Microsoft plans to restore features long requested by users—such as the ability to move the taskbar, faster File Explorer performance, improved Widgets functionality, and more control over updates. The company continues to adjust its approach based on feedback from its Windows Insider community, signaling a shift toward a more user-driven strategy for Windows development.
