Microsoft Reintroduces AI Screenshot Tool with Privacy Safeguards and User Controls

Microsoft has restarted the rollout of its controversial AI-powered screenshot feature, called Copilot+ Recall, which periodically captures snapshots of users’ screens. Initially paused in 2024 after being labeled a ‘privacy nightmare,’ the tool is now available in preview mode for select users enrolled in the Windows Insider program. Microsoft emphasizes that the feature is opt-in and that snapshots remain stored locally on users’ devices. Users can pause the function at any time, delete saved screenshots, and select which apps are included or excluded. Importantly, private modes in some browsers are not affected by the feature.

The primary aim of Recall is to allow users to quickly locate past activity, such as files, emails, or websites they’ve interacted with, like remembering a dress they saw online. However, privacy concerns persist. Experts warn that content from third parties, such as messages from others, could be stored without their consent, and that the saved data could be exploited if the device is accessed by malicious actors. Microsoft assures users that the data is neither shared with Microsoft nor third parties and is protected by identity verification protocols.

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office is monitoring the situation and expects Microsoft to adhere to data protection standards, including transparency and proper data usage practices. While the tool is rolling out globally, its release in the EU will be delayed until later in 2025.
