Microsoft Sets Minimum Standards for USB-C Ports on Windows PCs to Ensure Consistent Functionality

Microsoft is taking significant steps to address longstanding confusion and inconsistency in USB-C port functionality across Windows PCs. Historically, USB-C ports have varied widely in their capabilities, with some supporting charging, display output, and high-speed data transfer, while others offer only a subset of these features. This inconsistency has frustrated users who expect all USB-C ports to provide the same experience. To resolve this, Microsoft is leveraging its Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) to require that all USB-C ports on new Windows PCs support charging, at least one external display, and USB 3.x data transfer speeds. While higher transfer rates and advanced features such as Thunderbolt compatibility are not mandatory for all ports, any port advertising USB4 speeds must fully support Thunderbolt 3-certified accessories and advanced features like PCI Express tunneling and dual 4K display output. These new requirements, effective with Windows 11 version 24H2, aim to create a reliable baseline so users can expect consistent performance from any USB-C port on certified Windows devices. Microsoft will enforce these standards through automated testing and certification, ensuring that fixes and updates can be distributed via Windows Update.
