Microsoft Emphasizes Security Reasons Behind Windows 11 Upgrade and TPM 2.0 Requirement

Microsoft has reinforced its stance on the necessity of upgrading to Windows 11, citing security reasons tied to hardware requirements, particularly the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0. Approximately 240 million PCs are estimated to be ineligible for the free Windows 11 upgrade due to lacking this security chip. The company stresses that TPM 2.0 is crucial in safeguarding user data, enabling secure boot processes, and protecting systems against physical tampering. Microsoft’s messaging is now more focused on educating users about why TPM 2.0 is vital, simplifying the technical aspects to make them more understandable. While Windows 11 adoption is finally catching up with Windows 10, many users still resist upgrading their hardware, either due to cost or reluctance to discard still-functional devices. Workarounds for installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware are also being phased out. Without support extensions or hardware updates, millions of Windows 10 systems risk exposure to cybersecurity threats as support ends. Despite Microsoft’s push, a significant portion of users may remain on vulnerable systems unless more accessible or affordable upgrade paths are provided.
