Microsoft Introduces More Affordable, Lightweight Surface Laptop and Surface Pro Models With Trade-Offs
Microsoft has announced two new additions to its Surface lineup: the Surface Laptop (13-inch) and Surface Pro (12-inch). Unlike previous releases, these models do not replace last year’s versions but instead serve as more budget-friendly alternatives. Both devices are thinner, lighter, and offer longer battery life than their predecessors, with the Surface Laptop promising up to 23 hours of video playback and the Surface Pro up to 16 hours. However, the lower price points ($899 for the Laptop, $799 for the Pro) come with compromises. Both are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus chip, which has fewer cores and less performance than the Snapdragon X Elite found in more premium models. The new devices also feature smaller, lower-resolution screens with reduced refresh rates compared to last year’s editions. Storage starts at 256 GB with 16 GB RAM, and both devices offer improved connectivity and port selection. Notably, the Surface Pro’s keyboard has been redesigned for better usability and stylus charging. Both models include the latest AI features from Microsoft, such as Windows Studio Effects, Eye Contact, and the controversial Recall feature for activity tracking. However, for similar or lower prices, last year’s higher-spec Surface models are currently available at retailers, making the choice for consumers more complex. The new models are available for preorder now and go on sale May 20.
