Moi University Launches Local Assembly of 7,000 Computers to Boost Kenya’s Digital Hubs

Moi University has kicked off a significant tech initiative, assembling 7,000 desktop computers for the Jitume Digital Hubs Project. This programme, driven by MU Technologies—the university’s technology and innovation wing—aims to expand digital services and skills across Kenya, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The project includes local assembly, delivery, installation, and maintenance of the devices, in collaboration with the Konza Technopolis Development Authority. Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Kiplagat Kotut highlighted that the initiative will not only improve access to technology but also provide students with hands-on experience in assembly, quality control, software installation, logistics, and technical support. MU Technologies operates a digital assembly plant capable of offering repair, warehousing, and after-sales services, positioning Moi University as a key contributor to national digital programmes. Principal Secretary John Tanui visited the facility and commended the university’s capacity to produce devices locally, urging further investment in Kenya’s electronics sector. The initiative is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to boost online work, e-commerce, digital government services, and innovation, contributing to national development while nurturing a skilled workforce ready for the digital economy. Additional devices are also being assembled at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
