Tesla to Start Production at New AI Chip Factory in One Week

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company’s Terafab project, which is aimed at producing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips, will officially launch in seven days. This ambitious project is part of Tesla’s plan to develop its fifth-generation AI chip, which will enhance its autonomous driving technology including the Full Self-Driving software. Musk previously mentioned that even with maximum supply from partners, Tesla’s chip demand cannot be met, hence the need for their own mega chip fabrication facility. While discussions with Intel may take place, no formal agreements have been signed yet. In addition, Tesla is also working with Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung to produce these AI chips. The Terafab facility is expected to be significantly larger than conventional giga-fabs, reflecting Tesla’s urgent need for high-volume chip production. This project aligns with Tesla’s broader strategy to maintain leadership in electric vehicles and AI-powered autonomous systems.
