Lanie Tindale, a Canberra driver, was fined $423 and penalised 12 points by NSW authorities for allegedly not wearing her seatbelt correctly. Tindale insists she always wears her seatbelt properly, but the greyscale photos captured by an AI-equipped road camera showed what appeared to be an incorrectly fastened belt. On closer inspection, she discovered that her long hair, styled in a bun, was covering the seatbelt sash, making it appear as though she was non-compliant. After enhancing the photos with basic editing tools, she found the belt was in fact correctly worn. Tindale criticises the AI system for producing low-quality images that fail to account for such nuances and urges authorities to improve camera technology, increase contrast, and allow an administrative review before forcing drivers to contest fines in court. She highlights that while AI cameras are effective in enforcing compliance and saving lives, ambiguous cases like hers place unnecessary burdens on drivers. This case also reflects broader issues with automated enforcement, where human review and context are sometimes required to ensure fairness.
