New AI Tool Accurately Mimics Regional British Accents

A British company, Synthesia, has developed a new AI voice-cloning tool that is able to replicate a range of UK regional accents more accurately than many of its international competitors. Traditionally, AI voice models have been trained on data from North American or southern English sources, making them sound similar. To address this, Synthesia spent over a year gathering a diverse dataset of UK regional voices, combining studio recordings and online materials. Their tool, Express-Voice, allows users to clone real voices or generate synthetic ones. These voices can be applied to content like training videos, presentations, or customer support. The company believes that many customers want their regional accents to be represented authentically, emphasizing that synthetic voices should preserve the speaker’s identity, including their accent. However, the hardest accents to replicate are those less commonly recorded. This technology comes with concerns, especially as AI tools are being used to impersonate voices. There is a growing issue of voice-cloning tools being used maliciously by scammers, and many open-source tools lack safety measures. Despite these challenges, AI tools like Synthesia’s may eventually help reduce the accent biases that have been seen in some automated systems, including those in call centers or virtual assistants.
