EU Requires 5 Years of OS and Spare Parts Support for Smartphones and Tablets

Starting June 20, 2025, new European Union regulations will enforce stricter standards on smartphones and tablets, aimed at enhancing durability, repairability, and long-term software support. The measures include making operating system updates available for at least five years after the last unit of a product model is marketed. Manufacturers must also ensure devices are resistant to water, dust, and accidental damage, and that batteries last for a minimum of 800 cycles at 80% capacity. Additionally, companies must provide critical spare parts to professional repairers within 5 to 10 working days and keep them available for up to seven years after a device is no longer sold. The rules emphasize equal software access for independent repairers, a move designed to reduce e-waste and improve consumer rights. While this is a significant win for users, especially Android users often underserved by updates, concerns remain about enforcement, pricing of spare parts, and possible loopholes exploited by manufacturers. The regulation’s vagueness around terms like ‘reasonable price’ and ‘critical parts’ has sparked debate about its practical impact. Nonetheless, this legislative push is part of the EU’s broader effort to make consumer electronics more sustainable and serviceable.
