New UK Internet Rules Enforced, but Some Parents and Teens Remain Sceptical

New internet safety regulations in the UK came into effect on July 25, 2025, aimed at protecting children from harmful content online. The rules require age verification on pornographic content and adjustments to social media algorithms to prevent harmful material from appearing in young people’s feeds. While many, including Peter Kyle, the technology secretary, believe the new rules mark significant progress, others, like Ellen Roone, a mother who lost her 14-year-old son to suicide in 2022, remain sceptical. Ellen argues that the rules don’t go far enough and fears that children will continue to bypass age verification systems. Many young people, including teenagers from a youth club in Warrington, expressed similar concerns, suggesting that their peers would find ways around the content controls. Some worry the rules could lead to increased criminalization of teenagers who seek out restricted content. Despite these concerns, the regulator Ofcom has significant powers to enforce these rules, including imposing hefty fines and even blocking websites that fail to comply. While there is doubt about the rules’ effectiveness, there is hope that they represent a step forward in creating a safer online environment for children in the UK.
