Qualcomm’s Upcoming Snapdragon Chip for Wear OS Smartwatches: Key Performance and Efficiency Upgrades

Qualcomm is reportedly working on a new Snapdragon chip for Wear OS smartwatches, marking a significant upgrade over its previous offerings. This new chip, expected to be either Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 or W6 Gen 1, could bring notable improvements, including a shift from Samsung’s production process to TSMC’s, potentially enhancing battery life. Additionally, the chip would use updated DDR5 memory for a small boost in efficiency. The most significant change comes with the core configuration, replacing older designs with a new setup featuring 1x Arm Cortex-A78 and 4x Arm Cortex-A55 cores. Although the chip isn’t yet in production, these upgrades offer a glimpse into the future of Wear OS devices. However, the current Snapdragon W5 chip still provides adequate performance and battery life, which means devices like the Pixel Watch 4 will likely rely on the existing W5 chip for now. Despite the lack of an official release date, this development suggests that future Wear OS devices could see substantial improvements in both performance and battery efficiency.
