GNU Taler v1.0 Launches with Swiss Operations and Major Technical Improvements

GNU Taler, a privacy-preserving Free Software digital payment system, has officially released version 1.0. This milestone marks the beginning of its legal operations in Switzerland under Taler Operations AG, which now handles Swiss Franc-based transactions. While the system is fully functional and legally compliant, it is being launched in a public beta phase as no merchants currently accept the currency. The release includes significant improvements aimed at performance, post-quantum readiness, and anti-money laundering features. Noteworthy updates include simplified withdrawal processes, deterministic refresh signatures, and consolidated endpoint management. The update also addresses findings from an external iOS wallet audit, and offers multilingual legal documentation. GNU Taler enables digital cash to be issued by regulated providers and stored securely by users, with fast, traceable payments for merchants and full privacy for customers. It is designed to be scalable and adaptable to commercial, regional, or central bank use cases. Developers and businesses in Switzerland are encouraged to integrate Taler, with community and tutorial resources available. The release is co-funded by the European Commission and Swiss authorities under the NGI TALER initiative.
