HMD Global launches secure device business with Ivalo XE smartphone for security-critical sectors

HMD Global, the Finnish company known for building Android phones, is launching a new business unit, HMD Secure, aimed at targeting governments and other sectors requiring high security. The first product from this unit is the HMD Ivalo XE, a European-made smartphone designed with a focus on resilience, traceability, and security. While the phone is marketed as one of the few 5G devices developed and manufactured in Europe, it still relies on US-based Qualcomm technology, particularly the Dragonwing Q-6690 SoC. Despite this, HMD has emphasized that its manufacturing partners are based in Europe, ensuring a trusted supply chain with independent certifications. The Ivalo XE features a durable design with certifications like IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H. Security features include dual encryption, anti-tamper design, secure boot, and fingerprint authentication. The device is also designed for tactical environments, with specialized modular hardware for external connectivity and upgrades. The phone will be available in Q1 2026, with support and updates promised through 2032. However, full specifications, including memory and pricing, will be revealed closer to the launch date.
