Nothing CMF Phone 2 Pro: Modular Design with Performance Upgrades and Limited Compatibility

Nothing has launched the CMF Phone 2 Pro, its second modular smartphone under the CMF subbrand, continuing the concept of attachable accessories but with notable changes. The Phone 2 Pro is a budget-friendly Android device featuring a bright 120Hz OLED display, a triple rear camera setup including a 50MP telephoto lens, and storage options starting at 128GB. Unlike its predecessor, the new model no longer allows removal of the backplate; instead, modular covers are screwed onto the rear, potentially improving water resistance from IP52 to IP54. Accessories include a screw-on case, a kickstand-card wallet combo, a bright orange lanyard, and new swappable camera lenses (fisheye and macro). However, only the lanyard accessory from the original Phone 1 remains compatible, and most modules require the purchase of a separate cover. This has caused some criticism regarding the modular ecosystem’s practicality and longevity, as the Phone 2 Pro’s system is mostly incompatible with previous accessories and the range of modules has not expanded since the first model’s release. Performance-wise, the phone runs smoothly on a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Pro chipset with Android 15, promising three years of OS updates and six years of security patches. The device is available for preorder in Europe with limited accessory availability and can be purchased in the US only through a beta program with no official support. Alongside the phone, Nothing introduced budget earbuds with active noise cancellation and water resistance. Overall, while the Phone 2 Pro improves on performance and modular options, its ecosystem faces challenges in compatibility and expansion.
