Nvidia CEO expresses disappointment over China’s reported halt on AI chip purchases

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed his disappointment after reports emerged that China had ordered its top technology companies to stop purchasing Nvidia’s artificial intelligence (AI) chips. This move, attributed to China’s Cyberspace Administration, could impact Nvidia’s sales of chips that were specifically designed for the Chinese market. Huang, who is currently accompanying US President Donald Trump on a state visit to the UK, stated that he would remain ‘patient’ as the situation unfolds. Nvidia, which became the first company in the world to surpass a $4 trillion valuation in 2025, plays a central role in the ongoing AI boom with its chips powering data centers globally. However, China has been actively working to develop its own AI chips in an effort to compete with the US’s technological dominance. The halt in chip purchases comes after a temporary ban on the sale of Nvidia’s most advanced chips to China, which was reversed in July. Nvidia now faces an unprecedented situation where it must pay 15% of its Chinese revenues to the US government, a deal struck in the summer. Huang indicated that he would continue to support the US government’s efforts to resolve geopolitical tensions and would relay this message to Trump if asked.
