Nvidia announces development of orbital AI data centres for space applications

Nvidia has revealed plans to build artificial intelligence data centres in space, aiming to bring AI processing closer to where satellite data is generated. The initiative, centred around the new Space-1 Vera Rubin Module, will allow partners to establish orbital data centres that provide AI analysis for satellite constellations. CEO Jensen Huang described the project as a way to extend intelligence beyond Earth, enabling real-time sensing, autonomous decision-making, and spacecraft self-navigation. Orbital data centres could take advantage of abundant solar energy in space, which is up to eight times more efficient than on Earth, and reduce latency through laser links between hubs, surpassing the speed of ground-based cables. Technical challenges remain, including cooling systems and shielding servers from radiation in low Earth orbit. Partners such as Aetherflux and Starcloud are collaborating with Nvidia to overcome these hurdles, aiming to create scalable, hyperscale-class AI infrastructure in orbit. The project represents a significant step towards integrating space-based computing into the global cloud, supporting both scientific exploration and commercial applications.
