Modders Enable NVIDIA Smooth Motion on RTX 30-Series GPUs Through Custom Modifications

Modders have successfully enabled NVIDIA’s Smooth Motion frame generation feature on GeForce RTX 30-series ‘Ampere’ GPUs through custom modifications, despite NVIDIA’s official restriction to RTX 40-series and newer cards via the NVIDIA App. Two independent projects have emerged: pipotoufikxyz-lgtm’s dlssg_for_sm86 project, which expanded on NVIDIA’s DLSS-G runtime for SM86 architecture used in RTX 30 GPUs, adding Smooth Motion and Vulkan support, and NVSmooth30 by ItsAdeline, a clean-room compatibility layer targeting NVIDIA’s NvPresent64.dll Smooth Motion path. Both projects have been tested on specific RTX 30 models, with dlssg_for_sm86 verified on an RTX 3070 and NVSmooth30 on an RTX 3050 laptop GPU and RTX 3070. The modders emphasize that these are not plug-and-play solutions and require technical expertise. It’s important to note that Smooth Motion is distinct from Frame Generation (FG) or Multi-Frame Generation (MFG), which are hardware-dependent features available on RTX 40- and 50-series cards. The modders also caution that using these modifications can trigger anti-cheat systems in competitive online games, making them unsuitable for such environments. While the technical achievement demonstrates that Smooth Motion isn’t hardware-locked out of Ampere architecture, NVIDIA has not indicated any plans to officially support RTX 30-series owners with this feature. The development highlights ongoing community efforts to extend functionality to older hardware, though users should be aware of potential compatibility issues and limitations.
