Nvidia Faces Export Restrictions as US-China Tech Rivalry Intensifies

Nvidia, the prominent AI chipmaker, is at the center of growing tensions between the US and China over advanced technology and trade. Amid new US export controls, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang visited Beijing to maintain business relations. The restrictions require licenses to export the H20 AI chip to China, aiming to prevent Chinese military advancements in AI. Previously, the more advanced H100 chip was already banned. Despite being tailored to bypass earlier restrictions, the H20 chip is now also affected, impacting Nvidia’s ability to fulfill $5.5 billion worth of orders from Chinese tech giants like Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance. The US intends these measures to preserve a strategic lead in AI while encouraging domestic production. Meanwhile, China is responding by accelerating development of its own AI chips, with firms like Huawei stepping up. Analysts believe this may challenge China in the short term, but won’t halt its AI progress. Nvidia, whose Chinese market accounts for 13% of its global sales, is trying to reassure partners and navigate the changing regulatory landscape. The tech industry, as experts note, is becoming increasingly split between US- and China-led ecosystems.
