Ofcom Investigates Compliance of Porn Sites with New Age Verification Rules

Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, has launched formal investigations into four companies operating 34 pornographic websites to ensure compliance with new age verification requirements. These regulations, effective as of Friday, mandate that sites with adult content verify whether users are over 18 years old in order to prevent minors from accessing harmful material. The four companies under investigation collectively attract over 9 million monthly visitors. Ofcom’s focus on these particular companies is due to their significant user base and the potential risks posed by their platforms. This move follows a broader initiative by Ofcom, which has previously opened probes into other platforms, including 4chan and First Time Videos LLC. The age verification rules also apply to other online services like social media platforms, including Reddit and X, which are now prompting users to confirm their age for access to certain content. While these measures are designed to protect children online, they have faced criticism for potential privacy concerns and the risk of circumvention through VPNs. Over 400,000 people have signed a petition against the law, but the UK government has stated there are no plans to repeal it.
