UK Regulator Investigates X Platform Over Non-Consensual AI-Generated Sexual Images

Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, has launched an investigation into Elon Musk’s social media platform X following reports that its AI tool Grok is being misused to create sexualized images, including non-consensual intimate images of adults and children. If X is found to have violated UK law, it could face fines of up to 10% of its global revenue or £18 million, whichever is higher. The investigation will examine whether X removed illegal content promptly and whether it implemented effective safeguards to prevent UK users, particularly minors, from accessing such material. Several victims, including public figures, have reported that multiple sexualized images of them have been generated without consent. Government officials, including Technology Secretary Liz Kendall and former minister Peter Kyle, have expressed concern and emphasized the urgency of the investigation. Elon Musk has described the scrutiny as an attempt at censorship, while advocates stress the need for immediate action to protect women and children from AI-facilitated abuse. Ofcom may issue court orders to block access to X in the UK if it fails to comply. Internationally, Malaysia and Indonesia have temporarily restricted access to Grok over similar concerns. Experts note that legal enforcement will take time, but the priority remains the safety of users and the removal of illegal content.
