Ofcom introduces new guidelines to combat online sexism

Ofcom, the UK media regulator, has unveiled new guidelines aimed at making the internet safer for women and girls. These recommendations focus on simplifying the reporting of online abuse and holding platforms accountable for failing to address issues like online misogyny. Ofcom’s proposed measures include consolidating account privacy settings, de-monetizing violent content, and allowing users to report multiple abusive accounts at once. While the guidelines are not legally binding, Ofcom believes that the threat of public exposure will encourage tech companies to comply. Despite these efforts, critics argue that the absence of legally enforced rules limits the effectiveness of the measures. Advocates like Andrea Simon of the End Violence Against Women Coalition assert that without a mandatory code of practice, tech companies may not take these issues seriously. Influencers and sports advocates, such as Demi Brown, have spoken out about the emotional toll online abuse takes, stressing the need for a safer online space where people can express themselves freely. Despite growing concerns, some platforms remain reluctant to adopt the changes, leading to calls for stronger enforcement and regulation.
