Discord Trials Age Verification with Persona, Raising Privacy Concerns

Discord has announced plans for a global age verification rollout, which will require users to submit either facial scans or government-issued IDs to confirm their age. The rollout, set for March, has already sparked backlash from users concerned about privacy and data security. Some UK users are now part of a test using Persona, an age verification vendor whose lead investor is Founders Fund, co-founded by Peter Thiel. Thiel is also known for co-founding Palantir, a surveillance technology firm, and his controversial history in the tech and finance world. Discord states that data submitted to Persona will only be temporarily stored for up to seven days before deletion. While the company insists this measure is limited to certain users and is intended to improve age detection, critics remain wary due to Thiel’s involvement and the sensitive nature of the information being collected. The Electronic Frontier Foundation and other privacy advocates have expressed concern over potential misuse of user data. Discord has emphasized that facial data will primarily be processed locally, but the partnership with Persona has added to user apprehension.
