YouTube Marks 20 Years With Over 20 Billion Videos and New TV Features
YouTube is celebrating its 20th anniversary with remarkable milestones and new features. The first video uploaded on the platform, “Me at the zoo” by co-founder Jawed Karim, marked the beginning of what would become the most dominant video platform in the world. Since that inaugural upload, more than 20 billion videos have been posted on YouTube. As of March 2025, the platform reports that over 20 million videos are uploaded daily, and in 2024, users left over 100 million comments on average each day.
To mark the anniversary, YouTube is focusing on enhancing its television viewing experience. A redesigned TV app is set to launch this summer, with improvements in navigation, playback quality, and access to content features like comments and subscriptions. YouTube TV is also rolling out a long-requested feature allowing users to create their own multiviews — with up to four simultaneous streams — expanding beyond sports to include various types of channels.
CEO Neal Mohan noted earlier this year that TV screens have become the primary device for YouTube viewing in the U.S., signaling a major shift in user behavior. These developments emphasize YouTube’s continued evolution and dominance in the streaming space.
