OnlyFans Fined for Failing to Implement Accurate Age Verification Measures

OnlyFans’ parent company, Fenix, has been fined £1.05 million after providing inaccurate information about its age verification system. The fine came after the company was questioned by Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, regarding the effectiveness of its age-checking procedures. Fenix had claimed that it used facial age estimation technology, which was supposed to flag users under 23, but it was later revealed that the system’s threshold was set at 20. This led to an investigation and the conclusion that Fenix had violated its legal obligations to provide accurate information. Ofcom emphasized the importance of accurate data for monitoring platforms and ensuring they meet regulatory standards. Fenix accepted the fine, which was reduced by 30%, and the funds will be directed to the UK Treasury. The case occurred during the implementation of the Online Safety Act (OSA), which aims to strengthen online protections, particularly for younger audiences. OnlyFans is expected to enhance its age assurance measures by July 2025, a deadline set by the OSA to ensure better safety standards across platforms that deal with sensitive content.
