Ploopy Knob: A Precision Open-Source Control Device with Customizable Features
Ploopy, an open-source hardware company, has recently launched the Ploopy Knob, a compact and precise user interface device. This low-profile knob features a custom PCB powered by a USB-C connection and runs on the RP2040 chip with QMK firmware, offering users easy customization. Its smooth rotation is made possible by a 6705ZZ bearing and is enhanced by a 12-bit AS5600 magnetic rotary encoder, capable of sensing rotations as fine as 0.088 degrees, providing 4096 distinct positions for precise control. Notably, this device does not use mechanical encoders or potentiometers. The Ploopy Knob’s fully open-source nature means that users can access the 3D-printed case files, PCB design files, and firmware from the GitHub page, enabling anyone to modify or create their own versions of the knob. This aligns with Ploopy’s mission to push for more open-source hardware in the user interface space.
