OpenAI Integrates Shopping Features into ChatGPT with Personalized Recommendations
OpenAI has announced a new shopping feature within ChatGPT, allowing users to research and purchase products directly through the AI interface. The functionality, accessible to all users regardless of login status, redirects shoppers to retailer websites to complete transactions. Product recommendations are personalized based on user preferences and aggregated reviews from sources like WIRED and Reddit. Unlike Google Shopping, ChatGPT’s results are organic and not influenced by paid advertisements. OpenAI’s search product lead, Adam Fry, emphasized the tool’s conversational approach, which prioritizes understanding user preferences and review sentiment over keyword optimization. A key unresolved issue involves affiliate revenue models for publishers like WIRED, whose content informs recommendations but may not directly benefit from resulting sales. OpenAI plans to experiment with revenue-sharing approaches while focusing on refining user experience. The launch follows similar AI-powered shopping tools from competitors like Perplexity and Google, as OpenAI aims to expand its revenue streams toward ambitious long-term targets.
