OpenAI completes transition to for-profit status with Microsoft stake and AR/IA ambitions

OpenAI has completed its transition to a for-profit entity, enabling larger-scale fundraising and potentially paving the way for a stock market listing. Microsoft now holds a 27% stake and gains extended rights to OpenAI’s AI models through 2032, while OpenAI will support its board during the conversion. The arrangement redefines the partnership that began in 2019 when OpenAI was non-profit, allowing Microsoft to pursue artificial general intelligence independently or with others. OpenAI plans to convene an expert panel to verify any claim of reaching AGI, though panel members were not disclosed. The deal excludes consumer hardware but broadens Microsoft’s rights to OpenAI’s models. OpenAI has launched multiple products, including ChatGPT Atlas and Sora, and faced controversy over deepfake policies and potential mental health concerns. The company has a current valuation around $500 billion and reported 800 million weekly active users. Microsoft’s market capitalization surpassed $4 trillion after the announcement. The broader narrative centers on AI expansion, investment, and regulatory guardrails as OpenAI navigates profit motives and public scrutiny.
