OpenAI outlines five-year strategy to scale revenue and expand computing infrastructure
OpenAI currently generates around $13 billion annually, with approximately 70% of its revenue coming from individual users paying $20 per month for ChatGPT, despite only 5% of its 800 million users being paying subscribers. Despite this significant income, OpenAI plans to invest over $1 trillion over the next decade to expand its operations and computing infrastructure. The company has secured deals for more than 26 gigawatts of computing capacity from major hardware providers including Oracle, Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom. To sustain growth and manage these substantial investments, OpenAI is exploring multiple avenues, including government contracts, new shopping and video services, consumer hardware, and the possibility of becoming a computing provider itself through its Stargate data center initiative. This expansion is already critical for many major U.S. companies relying on OpenAI’s services, meaning any disruptions could have broader economic impacts. OpenAI’s five-year plan reflects a focus on balancing rapid revenue growth with ambitious technological and infrastructure development while diversifying its business operations.
