OpenAI halts deepfake videos of Martin Luther King Jr. after estate complaint

OpenAI has halted its AI app Sora from creating deepfake videos of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after his estate raised concerns about ‘disrespectful’ content. The technology, which allows users to generate hyper-realistic videos of historical figures and celebrities, had produced offensive videos of Dr. King, including altered versions of his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. This follows other controversies, such as AI-generated videos of figures like President John F. Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth II, and concerns from public figures like Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams. OpenAI announced it would pause deepfakes of Dr. King while strengthening controls for historical figures. Critics have raised concerns about the potential dangers of using AI to create deepfakes of deceased individuals, suggesting it could distort history and lead to the spread of misinformation. While OpenAI believes there are ‘strong free speech interests’ in depicting historical figures, it acknowledged the importance of protecting the likenesses of figures like Dr. King, especially at the request of their estates. The company is working to refine its policies to better balance creative freedom with ethical considerations.
