OpenAI Introduces o1-pro: A More Powerful but Costly AI Model
OpenAI has launched o1-pro, an upgraded version of its o1 AI reasoning model, available through its developer API. This version consumes more computing power to provide improved responses, but at a significantly higher price. OpenAI charges $150 per million input tokens and $600 per million output tokens, making it twice as expensive as GPT-4.5 for input and ten times more expensive than the base o1 model. The company hopes that developers will be willing to pay the premium for more reliable and sophisticated responses.
Although o1-pro has been available to ChatGPT Pro users since December, initial user feedback has been mixed. Some reported struggles with logic puzzles like Sudoku and minor failures in handling optical illusions. Internal OpenAI benchmarks indicate that while o1-pro performs slightly better in coding and math, its main advantage is in providing more consistent answers. For now, access to o1-pro is limited to developers who have already spent at least $5 on OpenAI’s API services. OpenAI sees this as a step toward enhancing AI reasoning capabilities while also monetizing high-performance AI solutions.
