Parallel Systems develops autonomous electric freight rail system for short-haul logistics
Parallel Systems, a Los Angeles-based startup founded in 2020 by former SpaceX engineer Matt Soule, is pioneering a new approach to short-distance freight transport in the U.S. by modernizing rail logistics. The company is developing battery-powered, autonomous rail vehicles that are compatible with existing infrastructure and control systems. These vehicles can attach and detach automatically, removing the need for manual and often dangerous coupling. Their system is tailored for short-haul freight, a sector traditionally dominated by trucking due to the high cost and inefficiency of using full-length trains over short distances.
Recently approved by the Federal Railway Administration, Parallel is launching a pilot project in Georgia, testing its technology over a 160-mile corridor between the Port of Savannah and local distribution hubs. The goal is to make rail freight more accessible, flexible, and cost-effective.
Parallel has raised $38 million in a Series B round led by Anthos Capital and Collaborative Fund, bringing its total funding to over $100 million. The company plans to launch commercially in 2026, initially targeting the U.S. and Australia. Soule believes the timing is ideal, especially amid potential tariff shifts that could spur companies to seek cheaper logistics solutions. He views this as a rare opportunity to modernize a traditionally stagnant industry.
