PhotoGIMP Updated with GIMP 3.0 Support for Former Photoshop Users

The PhotoGIMP project, a free open-source tool designed to make GIMP more familiar for Adobe Photoshop users, has been updated to support GIMP 3.0. PhotoGIMP customizes GIMP’s interface, tools, and keyboard shortcuts to resemble Photoshop’s layout, making the transition easier for users switching from Adobe’s software.

The update introduces new default settings that optimize canvas space, a custom splash screen, and a separate launcher entry with a unique icon and name. Users can install PhotoGIMP on GIMP 3.0 across different formats, including Flatpak, AppImage, and native .deb packages. The installation process involves backing up existing settings, downloading the package, and merging its contents with GIMP’s local configuration files.

For users who wish to revert to the default GIMP interface, PhotoGIMP can be uninstalled by removing the modified configuration files and restoring the original settings. The update also provides an older version compatible with GIMP 2.10.

PhotoGIMP is particularly useful for those accustomed to Photoshop’s workflow, as it streamlines GIMP’s interface to better match Adobe’s software. The update ensures continued support for users transitioning to GIMP 3.0 while maintaining compatibility with earlier versions.
