Bill Atkinson, a pioneering software engineer at Apple, passed away at the age of 74 after battling pancreatic cancer. Atkinson was instrumental in the development of several foundational Apple products and technologies, most notably the Macintosh computer, where he contributed key software innovations. He also played significant roles in the Lisa project and was the creator of QuickDraw, an essential graphics package for early Apple systems. One of his most forward-thinking creations was HyperCard, which prefigured the interactive linking structure that would later define the World Wide Web. Another notable concept he worked on was the Magic Slate, an early conceptual precursor to what would eventually become the iPad. As Apple employee number 51, Atkinson had a profound impact on the company’s culture of innovation. Later in life, he became passionate about nature photography and reflected on his life with gratitude, calling it ‘amazing and wonderful.’ Following news of his death, Apple CEO Tim Cook and tech journalist John Gruber paid tribute to Atkinson, calling him a visionary and one of the greatest programmers of all time. His legacy remains embedded in the tools and philosophies that helped shape modern computing.
