Pakistan completes 5G spectrum auction raising $507 million, govt calls it major milestone
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described Pakistan’s recent 5G spectrum auction as a “wonderful beginning”, marking a significant step forward in the country’s technological and economic development. The auction, held in Islamabad, successfully sold 480 MHz of spectrum for $507 million, with major telecom operators Zong, Jazz, and Ufone securing key portions in the 2,600 MHz band. Jazz acquired the largest share with 190 MHz, followed by Ufone with 180 MHz and Zong with 110 MHz.
Addressing a ceremony where licences were formally awarded, the prime minister emphasised that the process was conducted in a transparent manner, noting that legal hurdles had historically delayed such initiatives. He appreciated the efforts of Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and other officials for resolving these challenges and ensuring a smooth process. Shehbaz Sharif also linked this development to broader reforms, including recent privatisation efforts, highlighting transparency as a key government priority.
The prime minister expressed hope that 5G services would expand across the entire country, benefiting both urban centres and rural areas. He stressed the importance of modern technologies, including information technology and artificial intelligence, in empowering Pakistan’s youth and driving future growth. He also reaffirmed the importance of Pakistan-China relations, noting their role in technological advancement.
IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja termed the auction one of the most important milestones in Pakistan’s history, pointing out that it would not only introduce 5G but also improve the quality of existing 4G services. She added that the auction has tripled Pakistan’s spectrum capacity to over 7,500 MHz. Additionally, the government is working on establishing an AI Council to guide policy and development in emerging technologies.
Overall, the auction is being seen as a major step towards digital transformation and improved connectivity in Pakistan.
