Proton Moves AI Servers Out of Switzerland Over Privacy Concerns

Proton, the Geneva-based cybersecurity company known for its encrypted email service, has announced it will move its AI server infrastructure outside Switzerland due to concerns over proposed changes to the country’s surveillance laws. The company, which is developing its own artificial intelligence system called Lumo, has decided to invest in server facilities in Germany and Norway instead of Switzerland. The shift comes after Swiss government proposals raised alarms about mass surveillance, which Proton fears could compromise the privacy of its users. Andy Yen, Proton’s CEO, criticized the government’s plans, equating them to mass surveillance regimes seen in countries like Russia. Proton aims to offer an alternative to the surveillance capitalism model led by American and Chinese tech giants. The company’s Lumo AI, which emphasizes encryption to protect users’ data, will no longer be housed in Switzerland, marking a significant shift in Proton’s strategy. Yen argued that if the proposed laws were enacted, the privacy of services in Switzerland could become even less secure than those offered by major companies like Google or Microsoft.
