ProtonMail Provides User Information to FBI Leading to Arrest of Atlanta Activist
ProtonMail, a Switzerland-based email provider known for offering secure and private communications, assisted the FBI in identifying and capturing a political activist involved in the Atlanta Forest protests, also called “Stop Cop City.” This activist, linked to alleged acts of arson, vandalism, and doxing, was using the ProtonMail address defendtheatlantaforest@protonmail.com. The FBI requested the information through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Switzerland. ProtonMail provided details linked to the payment method used for the account, which ultimately led investigators to the individual behind the account. The arrest highlights the limits of privacy even with services marketed as secure, though ProtonMail notes that payments via cryptocurrency or cash can enhance anonymity. The DTAF movement began in 2023 opposing the police plan to clear a forest for new training facilities. This case underscores the intersection of digital privacy, law enforcement, and political activism in the U.S., raising broader questions about online anonymity and legal jurisdiction across borders.
