UK Publishers Raise Concerns Over AI Summaries Reducing Website Traffic
UK newspapers and media publishers are expressing concern over the impact of AI Overviews (AIO) on online traffic. These AI-generated summaries appear at the top of Google search results, giving users key information without requiring them to visit the original news sites. Reach, which owns newspapers including The Mirror and Daily Express, reported reduced click-throughs on stories, attributing the decline to AIO. DMG Media stated that AIO has caused click-through rates to drop by as much as 89%. Publishers argue this undermines their revenue, as they rely on site visits for advertising and subscriptions. Google defends AIO, claiming it increases overall clicks and provides users with more complex queries and links. Industry experts warn that Google’s new AI Mode, which offers conversational-style search with fewer links, could further reduce traffic to publishers. Some groups, including the Independent Publishers Alliance and Foxglove, have filed a complaint with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, seeking interim measures to prevent misuse of publisher content. Publishers are experimenting with optimizing content for AI summaries and exploring alternative audience engagement strategies, such as newsletters and WhatsApp alerts, to maintain traffic and revenue.
