Mozilla Announces Shutdown of Pocket; Key Alternatives Offered for Users
Mozilla has announced the closure of Pocket, its popular read-it-later app, effective October 8, 2025. Originally acquired in 2017, Pocket has served millions of users in saving articles, notes, and highlights for later reading. Mozilla stated that shifting user habits in web browsing prompted the decision, allowing the company to redirect resources to other priorities. Users are advised to export their data before the shutdown.
In response, several alternative apps have emerged to assist with the transition. Notable options include Matter, which offers AI-enhanced reading tools and podcast transcriptions; Instapaper, one of the earliest alternatives with robust archiving and Kindle integration; and Raindrop.io, which combines bookmarking with organizational AI tools. Other alternatives include Plinky, which features folders, tags, and reminders; Readwise Reader, with integrations into knowledge tools; and Paperspan, a simple read-it-later tool with text-to-speech. Open source and privacy-focused tools like Wallabag, Readeck, and Obsidian Web Clipper offer users flexibility and data control. Additionally, Recall and Dewey integrate AI for summarizing and organizing content.
Each app has its unique strengths, from offline reading to AI features and integration with productivity apps. The Pocket shutdown signals a broader shift in how users manage information online, with new tools adapting to evolving needs.
