Reddit’s Automated Ban of 11-Year Account Tests EU’s DSA Transparency Rules

The user, DF5JT, claims the ban violated Article 17 of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates transparency in content moderation decisions. Despite multiple attempts to appeal through EU regulatory channels, including Austria’s RTR and the European Commission’s transparency database, the user received no explanation for the ban. The DSA requires platforms to provide reasons for content removals, but Reddit’s appeal process is limited to a 250-character form with no confirmation. DF5JT’s GDPR data request returned truncated data, highlighting systemic issues with the DSA’s enforcement. The case raises questions about the effectiveness of EU regulations in holding tech companies accountable, as well as the challenges users face in accessing transparency and redress. Similar experiences are reported by other users, including a throwaway account banned for the same reason.
