Rare RCA Spectra 70/35 Control Panel from 1966 Found in Collapsed Garage

A Reddit user, SonOfADeadMeme, recently unearthed a rare RCA Spectra 70/35 mainframe computer control panel from 1966 in the ruins of their family’s old garage. This discovery, shared on the ‘retrobattlestations’ subreddit, sparked attention from vintage computing enthusiasts due to its historical significance. The panel, which had likely remained untouched for decades, was discovered after the dilapidated garage finally collapsed. It may be the only known surviving example of its kind.

The RCA Spectra 70 series, introduced in the mid-1960s, was RCA’s attempt to compete with IBM’s dominant System/360 line. These computers featured software compatibility with IBM systems, enabling businesses to switch without rewriting code. The control panel found includes various switches, lights, and the distinctive ’70/35 SYSTEM’ marking. It would have been mounted on the side of the processor cabinet and used for system diagnostics and control.

Though fully restoring the system would require the remaining 1,500 pounds of hardware, the user plans to preserve and display the panel by installing LED lights behind it without making any modifications. The discovery underscores the rarity of RCA’s Spectra line, which was discontinued in 1971 after RCA left the computer business. Most Spectra hardware was scrapped, making this panel a rare and valuable artifact of computing history.
