Researchers Develop Contact Lenses That Convert Infrared Light into Visible Vision

Scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China have developed innovative contact lenses capable of converting infrared light into visible light, allowing users to perceive infrared signals and even see in the dark. Detailed in a study published in the journal Cell, the lenses utilize special nanoparticles to translate parts of the infrared spectrum—normally invisible to the human eye—into wavelengths the brain can interpret visually. Impressively, the lenses do not require an external power source.

Human and animal testing showed that participants could see flickering infrared lights, including when their eyes were closed, as near-infrared light penetrates the eyelid more effectively than visible light. The researchers also demonstrated that the lenses could receive data encoded in infrared flashes, raising potential applications in secure communication, encryption, and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Moreover, by converting different infrared wavelengths into distinct colors, the technology could help people with color vision deficiencies. While the current prototype lacks high spatial resolution and detail clarity, ongoing work aims to improve sensitivity and image precision. The team also suggested that using glasses positioned closer to the retina could further enhance performance.

This breakthrough highlights a significant advance in wearable visual enhancement technology, with promising applications in medicine, surveillance, and communication.
